Earlier this week I decided to finally embark on my mission of traveling around and eating donuts, while taking photos of them. I could have started slightly more locally than Abbotsford, but even though there are a few good places in town, it's almost harder to justify going spending money on them when I'm in town.
Plus, I still had about $10 in Canadian cash from being in Toronto 2 1/2 years ago. It was the perfect excuse!
So this morning I headed out. I decided to go to Abbotsford instead of Langley, so I could avoid the Bellingham hell that is the Guide Meridian. I'd though too about doing a hike on my way back, but sadly the notorious PNW rain decided to start up again so I nixed that idea. Which meant that by the time I got to the border the only reason I had for crossing was donuts. The customs agent gave me a funny look, warned me that the line to cross back into the States was about an hour long, and let me on my merry way.
Just up the road a few kilometers.... Tim Hortons! I picked out six, because they were about a dollar each, and picked myself a small coffee. (Verdict on the coffee: not bad. I'm not sure what the fuss is about, but I guess I don't know why Dunkin Donuts coffee is such a big deal either.)
My donuts! A honey cruller, sour cream glazed old fashioned, apple fritter, plain cake, chocolate glazed old fashioned, and sugar cake. I'm not really into the super sweet donuts, and the apple fritter was me taking a chance, since I don't usually care for them.
Honey cruller: I WISH I HAD SO MANY MORE OF THESE! So delicious! I like how light they are, and how they pull apart so nicely!
I felt really odd sitting in the store though, so I decided to bring my coffee and donuts home with me. I made a brief stop at the Visitors Center to pick up information on local hikes (an excuse for more donuts in the future) and headed back to the border where, after a 30 minute wait, I got more strange looks and was let through. ("Is this your car?" "Yes." "You decided to come up on a Saturday morning for donuts?" "Yeah, I know, bad choice of days, but yes." "Do you have anything to declare?" "Just my box of donuts!")
WELCOME TO 'MURICA, DELICIOUS PASTRIES!
(I just thought this sign was super hilarious, and so typical of us. "WELCOME TO THE U.S.! LOOK AT OUR FLAD AND THIS PICTURE OF AN EAGLE!")
