i forgot that i was planning on talking about the ana mendieta exhibit i saw last saturday at the des moines art center. but that was almost a week ago, and so i don't know what to say anymore other than it was brilliant. it's a shame her career was so short.

oh, the humanity!
yesterday i watched the series finale for star trek: enterprise. and what did the producers and writers do? seriously screw it up. my sister said she doesn't consider it canon, and a lot of other people have said that for them the finale is "terra prime", the two episodes before the finale. probably just as sad of an ending, without making a joke out of it.
i mean, when the actors say that the finale is "appalling", that tells you something.
augh! so, to start with, the whole premise of the episode that it was a holo-program that riker was participating in made sense a little, but took away from the fact that it was the series finale for enterprise and those actors. also, it was supposed to be six years after the previous enterprise episodes, and while i know that it didn't need to be entirely plausible (transferring or promoting crew would mean that not everyone would be there, which would probably upset people) there were some things that were really disapointing, such as t'pol and trip not being together after everything that had happened before (the baby, the kiss and t'pol asking him to stay, etc.). and then the real kicker was them killing off trip. not only did it seem to be completely unnecessary outside of the context of the holoprogram, and not even remotely like something that trip would do, but afterwards none of the crew members seemed upset about it. t'pol was upest, but about someone else completely, and then reed, travis and hoshi appear at this thing that they were going to and instead of being sad about trip, who they served with for ten years, they complain about their seating. i just don't understand what they were thinking when they decided this would be a good episode to air. plus, the bit about shran falling into the wrong crowd thing is kind of fishy.
i think the best thing to do is to pretend that this episode never existed. perhaps paramount can recall it, destroy all evidence of it's ever having happened. then we can just end with "terra prime", and the possibilities it sort of leaves. i mean, they do make movies, the finale doesn't have to be so final. i might not be so upset about it, but it's the first time in 18 years they won't be producing any new shows, and they have to go and end it like this?

try as i might
i just do not find chuck palahniuk to be an author that i am remotely interested in. i'm not sure why i checked out another one of his books, then.
also, stephanie's spock is really creeping me out--she leaves him in the living room so then i see him out of the corner of my eye and i think someone is in the room with me.
and, last night i finally talked to erika on the phone for the first time since we saw each other in february. i know, i'm bad at calling people. it made my day though.
finally, it turns out that fugitive kate from lost grew up in iowa. and her friend tom or whatever his name was said "no self-respecting iowa boy goes anywhere without beer." well, at least they didn't come right out and call iowans hicks, although they were standing amongst some cows when he said it.

things
- stephanie is upset about the cancellation of star trek enterprise after only four seasons, so she bought the dvd of season one that just came out. she's already watched over half of it (without me, mostly). today she has also traded some cds for a life-size cardboard spock, i presume to go with her life-size cardboard legolas.
- everyone should read assassination vacation. "...no sitting American president had ever left the country, and he didn't want to stir up a diplomatic hullabaloo. Especially since after the Spanish-American War exposed our lust for sugar, the Canucks might have suspected McKinley was invading to steal their maple sugar."
- there was a book sale at the library last weekend. i told myself i wouldn't go, but i did. i didn't buy any books teaching me to do the hustle this time, but i did find a copy of i capture the castle. and a video of the animated the hobbit. and i only spent $4 total.
- the cornell alumni photo show over homecoming. they asked thirty alum to participate, and one of them was me? and the word "exemplary" was used? of course i'm going to do it! between that, the art fair and submitting entries to the state fair i will be busy this summer. i also sold some photographs (finally!) to derek.
- in two weeks laura will be in iowa.

raku firing
last night i went to a raku firing/potluck at the house of stephanie's ceramics professor. stephanie was at work for the first couple of hours so i just told everyone to pretend i was her. it was really fun to see, and stephanie's friends are really nice. i took a lot of pictures--i made a photo album but i of course will still put pictures here. it makes my post look longer.
i love the way that everything glows right when it comes out of the kiln. after that, it goes into a garbage can with burning straw, but i can't remember what that is called. reduction, or something like it. anyway. i'm glad i went because it was just a lot of fun, and it wasn't ever anything i'd ever gotten to do before. also, it was just such a beautiful evening to be outside and stand near the kiln. very relaxing.

ribbons
my sister's nine ribbons from the student art fair. they handed out twenty, so it's clear who swept it. (to be fair, my sister does a few different mediums, so the judge didn't realize that he was giving so many to one person. but that's still pretty cool.)
