are you mad happy?

last night i went to gabe's with melody, and the guy we saw play well, i don't know if he's mad happy, but he is certainly a touch mad.  in a fabulous sense, i mean!  i can't remember what his name is, but apparantly he's some sort of iowa city icon; he makes music on a keyboard using the pre-sets.  and they are titled things with words like "vampire bat" and "wizard's song" and other odd things.  and the whole thing made me laugh, because it was just so awesome.

and melody and i drank, including a shot of tequila, so i was pleasantly tipsy and kept having revelations this consisted mostly of "OH MY GOD, MELODY!  WE'RE GOING TO ALAKSA!"  followed by a feeling of great jubilation.

and i'm still feeling (mad!) happy even though a) target is now scheduling me for guest service shifts and not only that, but closing guest service shifts which will mean very late nights and b) once i get back from alaska i will be homeless and jobless and c) there are two parties next door with loud, conflicting musical tastes, and neither taste is very good.

I'M GOING TO ALASKA!

ach!

i'm so bored!  and alias isn't on for four more minutes!  someone entertain me!

sick as a dog

i am sick for the third day in a row.  and i keep feeling better, and then i feel worse.  wtf?  i have to go to work tomorrow!

Wednesday, April 19, 2006

my bad news is, there is no bad news!

  • i talked to my brother on the phone for 49 minutes tonight.  we are two people who never really call other people, so we don't talk very often.

  • i now weigh what i did when i started college, and i feel so skinny.  (but it's all diet, not exercise so i could use some muscle.)

  • i didn't get into the grad school program at the lcc.  at least, not the photojournalism one--i said i wanted to be considered for the photography one but it's kinda late in the year so i'm not holding my breath.

  • I'M GOING TO ALASKA!

  • easter was really strange, since my siblings were gone.  we ate easter dinner at applebee's.  i had the fiesta lime chicken.  not very easter-like.

  • alias was on, and it was hard to sit through two hours of it.  but it's alias and it's the end so it seems like maybe it's better than it has been even if i don't know who everyone is.

  • i also like bullet points.  it's like making lists, which i do obsessively.

  • i am now going to bed.  i had to open today, and i am exhausted.  (or rather, "tired" as "tarred", to piss laura off! hehe!)

  • there is a tornado photo album.  a lot of the photos aren't very good, but it was night.

  • as you can see, i changed the title of the post.  i thought of this, and realized it was MUCH funnier!

this week's lesson: you can't outwit the weather.

i know i have been pretty cavalier about things like tornadoes, especially living in iowa.  i mean, only two weeks ago we had a warning that amounted to basically nothing.  so thursday night some of us were hanging out in the kitchen just sort of ignoring the bad weather until it started to hail.  then we decided to go on the balcony and watch it while drinking wine.  we even heard that wal-mart had gotten hit on the south side of town (and there was a big cheer), but i think we all had the "until i see it coming" attitude.  well, after hanging out up there for awhile, burgess came upstairs and said "i can see it!"  so clearly we got smart about it and ran for the basement.  since i'm on the first floor, i ran into my room on my way down to grab my bag (because clearly i will be needing my drivers licence after a torndao, i should have grabbed shoes that were not flip-flops instead) and when i was in my room all of the sudden i could feel the wind getting stronger through my window.  i may have heard it too, but between the alcohol and the fact that a TORNADO WAS COMING BY i honestly don't remember.  also, that is when the electricity went off, and people started yelling.

so we gathered in the basement while the lightening outside was like a strobe light and i tried to call laura while constantly being cut-off.  we didn't stay down for very long, and when we went up to the porch, it didn't look so bad.

Lightening

but it came very, very close to our house.  a lot of the damage in my neighborhood is on washington and iowa, one and two blocks north of college.  so we were standing outside drinking beer/wine/whatever and trying to call people, ian's cousin ryan came over and said that the apartment building by his lost the roof and i think he mentioned a gas leak (he lives, i think, on washington).  all we could see from our house were a couple of downed trees and some power lines.  eventually, melody and i decided to investigate, so we walked up summit towards the damage.  there was a HUGE tree that fell on someone's truck, and then when we got the corner we saw that an entire electrical pole was in the street, not just lines.

after that, we walked some more (drinking, so it's all sort of a haze, although it probably would have been anyway) up washington, to governor, and then we saw the alpha chi omega house, which keeps being shown on the news.  to stumble upon that was just surreal, the entire east wall of the house was just gone, and there were bunk beds just sitting there, exposed.

East_wall_alpha_chi_omega

we walked north another block to iowa, and could hear a very loud hissing noise, and smelled the gas, so we quickly walked away from that.  i still really haven't seen what iowa looks like, but i imagine it's pretty much the same.

so we walked elsewhere...i know we walked through college green park, just a couple of blocks from our house.  the park is basically a gazebo, a small playground, and some beautiful trees that must be at least a hundred years old.  they are all down, almost every single one of them.

College_green_park

we also went downtown, and we were some of those drunken idiots walking around with open beer cans.  i know, stupid.  by that point i was already pretty drunk, which seems to be my reaction when weird stuff happens.  i wasn't trying to be rude or anything by it. it was crazy downtown, there were police trying to keep everyone off of the ped mall, students everywhere, apparantly there was looting going on and stuff.  it was just nuts.  after awhile of that, we went back to the house and hung out on the balcony, being loud.

friday morning i woke up very early (6:30) and there were some tree removal folks removing that HUGE tree off of the truck.  melody and i decided, after i called in to work to say i wasn't going to go in, to walk around again and see what was happening.  we pretty much took the same path as before, i think, but it's even more unreal when you can actually see what's going on.  there were people everywhere doing the same thing and taking photos, and even then the traffic on college street was pretty bad.  i think burlington was closed down or something, because college is never that busy normally.*  anyway, i took more photos of everything except you can actually see things in the daylight ones.  it's just so bizarre.

Back_view_of_anomy_house

a bunch of us went to anomy house to help clean up.  they are right next to that sorority house that was so badly hit, but most of the damage was to the windows and trees, thankfully.  when we got there, the roofers were already there and said they would board up windows, so all we really had to do was clean up glass.  i felt mostly in the way, though.  after that was done, and lunch at summit, i decided that i would shower and come to ottumwa, where i am now.

Washington_street_mess

at first i really wanted to leave because i felt like i was in the way, i was tired (i'm still tired, i can't sleep, which could just be me, or could be because of this), and i really felt like i needed to know what was happening.  but now i want to go back, because it's hard to see all of this on the news and in the papers.  i'm so, so grateful that i still have a house (and my car), but that doesn't necessarily make it easier.  even though when i try to help i always feel like i'm doing the opposite, not being able to is just as hard.  i don't know.  anyway, i will finish editing my photos later and make an album.  i took a lot that night, and most of them are bad, but some of them might be interesting.  i just can't handle this very slow internet connection my parents have.

*because everyone's reaction should be when a state of emergency is declared somewhere "hey, let's go drive there and gawk and all the unlucky people!"  causing traffic jams is most DEFINITELY the most helpful thing in a situation like that.

hell yeah, motherfuckers!

guess where melody and i are going this summer?

ALASKA!

oh, internet! i thought i'd lost you!

i had a long weekend with no internet, and i thought it was gone forever but yesterday i did something on my computer (probably the same thing i do at work, unplug, plug back in) and it found a connection.  it was a bad connection, but since that happens a lot i wasn't worried.

the best part is that it was working when i got home from work, so i got to check my email and see that alaska general seafood has expressed an interest in employing me for about five weeks this summer in naknek.  excitement!  someone has finally gotten back to me about something!  (of course i still need to do a phone interview, but i get the feeling i would have to be a total jackass to bomb that.)

the only thing that is sad, is in order for them to pay for your transportation to/from seattle (besides finishing the season) is that you can't stick around after you finish working.  otherwise you forfeit it.  hm.  so i guess if want to see alaska, i have to go beforehand?  i need to ask about this, because part of the reason to do this is so we can see alaska.

it's so fun!

this website is pretty funny.  "miseryyyy!"

also fun:
Dsc02685
when a large portion of plaster falls from the ceiling.  when you and two other people are standing nearly right underneath it.  dust!  everywhere!  in my hair!  (which is doing it's super-frizz business again, thanks humidity!)

i was only kidding earlier at work when i said that i would finish my $4 bottle of wine tonight, of which there is about 2/3, but i think now i may actually drink it all.  as disgusting as it is.  celebrate the beginning of another long weekend and the fact that i have survived living in this house for this long.

miscellaneous!

it's spring!  hooray, i feel almost human again!

Dsc02660
on the way to new pi last night.

i knew about this magazine, but then i saw it at target.  clearly, it is for me.  then i decided to make this recipe, except instead of couscous i used some polenta i had already bought.  OMG.  it's so good, i'm sad i don't have any more chicken!  (i mean, i have leftovers, and extra leeks, but i could eat it for probably a week!  it's such a fabulous change from pasta for every meal.  spring = an interest in food again!)

Dsc02666

today i bought this orchid, because they wanted me to defect it out since the planter it was in broke.  so.  another plant for me!  i have no idea how to take care of orchids, but i will learn.  that's what the internet is for!

i got my golas yesterday, the second pair i ordered since the first were most defintely too big.  they sent them overnight for me since they think i'm such a good customer, hehe!  i so am in love with them!  and now i can finally toss those brown shoes i've been wearing, with the fake leather peeling off.  (although you know i will keep wearing them anyway!)

Dsc02671
(ignore the state of my rug.  it desperately needs a vacuuming!)

and lastly, another link!  mongolian taxi service.  i'm such a pushover, hehe!  but for real, go check it out!

i have to know!

the people who sell stuff on ebay, like brand-new, name brand shoes and the like, where do they get the stuff to make stores and sell it for so cheap?  i know not all of it is fake, although i'm sure some of it is.  do they just get the stuff that doesn't sell?  or is it stolen?  i should really a) stay away from ebay before i buy something else i want but really don't need*, and b) GO TO BED.

also, i have discovered my baking match: sugar cookies.  i tried, again, to make them today and beth had to finish them up because i am apparantly incapable of producing a dough that is going to roll out.

*i bought my golas last week, finally, but they are way to big, so i have to send them back and hope that a six isn't too small since apparantly golas don't come in half sizes.  argh!  i really like them, too so i'm keeping my fingers crossed!
